What Is TPI Golf? Screening and the Body-Swing Connection

TPI stands for Titleist Performance Institute. It is an education and research organisation that teaches golf, fitness and medical professionals about the relationship between a golfer's movement and the way they swing.

You may also hear the terms TPI screen, body-swing connection or TPI Certified professional. They are related, but they do not all mean the same thing.

What is the body-swing connection?

Golf technique does not exist separately from the golfer producing it.

Strength, mobility, balance, coordination, injury history and confidence can influence the movement options available. That does not mean every swing characteristic is caused by a physical restriction. It means the body is relevant when deciding whether a technical request suits the golfer.

TPI describes its approach as assessing how physical function relates to golf-swing mechanics and performance.

What happens in a TPI screen?

A Level 1 TPI screen uses a standard series of movement tests. These examine areas such as posture, rotation, balance and the golfer's ability to separate or coordinate different parts of the body.

The screen helps create a structured picture of how the golfer moves on that day. It can highlight movements that may deserve further investigation or physical development.

It is not a medical diagnosis. A failed or limited movement test does not prove the cause of pain or a particular swing pattern. Medical concerns should be assessed by an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.

What can a TPI screen help with?

Used properly, it can help a coach or fitness professional:

• understand the golfer's available movement options;

• choose exercises that match identified physical needs;

• avoid demanding a position the golfer cannot currently access comfortably;

• provide baseline measures for future review;

• communicate more clearly across golf, fitness and medical support.

The information becomes useful when it changes the decision that follows. Collecting test scores without connecting them to the golfer's goals, symptoms and swing adds little value.

What does TPI Certified mean?

TPI offers education across golf, fitness, medical, junior and power pathways. A professional's certification level and track indicate the training they have completed; it does not make every certified professional interchangeable.

When choosing someone, check:

• their current certification on the official TPI directory;

• their professional scope and other qualifications;

• whether they regularly work with golfers like you;

• what the assessment includes;

• how the findings will influence your plan.

At Macro Golf, a TPI screen is one source of information within a wider Blueprint.

We consider the golfer's movement, swing, shot pattern, physical capacity, intentions, symptoms and goals together. The screen does not dictate a swing model. It helps us decide what is relevant for the individual.

One golfer may benefit from physical development. Another may have enough movement already and need a different technical or performance intervention. The Match-Up matters more than the test in isolation.

Is a TPI assessment right for you?

It may be useful if you:
