What is the Fastest Way to Add Club Head Speed?
Oct 19, 2023For many golfers, the quickest way to discover more clubhead speed is to practise swinging faster and measure the result.
That sounds obvious, but plenty of golfers never make a genuine high-speed swing. They spend years trying to move perfectly at the same comfortable pace.
Speed intent can produce an immediate change. It is not, however, a complete long-term programme and it is not appropriate for every golfer on day one.
First, establish a reliable baseline
Use a launch monitor or validated speed radar. Warm up, then record several normal driver swings rather than choosing one unusually fast reading.
Track:
-
clubhead speed;
-
ball speed;
-
strike location;
-
direction and curvature;
-
how the effort felt.
Speed without usable contact may not improve the shots that matter.
Practise maximum intent in small doses
After a progressive warm-up, make a small number of swings with the intention of moving the club as fast as possible.
A simple session might use:
-
Three fast swings without a ball.
-
Rest for 30–60 seconds.
-
Repeat for three to five sets.
-
Finish with several drives where speed and strike both count.
Stop when speed drops repeatedly or movement becomes uncontrolled. More fatigued swings are not automatically better practice.
Use feedback
Immediate speed feedback helps you learn what actually creates a faster swing. Feel is unreliable; a swing that feels violent may be slower than one that is better sequenced.
Measure trends across sessions under similar conditions. Do not chase a personal best on every repetition.
What if simply swinging faster stops working?
Your next constraint may be:
-
strength;
-
the ability to produce force quickly;
-
technique or sequencing;
-
physical movement options;
-
confidence at higher speed;
-
poor strike as speed rises;
-
inadequate recovery or excessive training volume.
Research has shown that structured strength-and-power training can improve clubhead speed. Overspeed training can also help some golfers. Neither method guarantees the same response for everyone.
Keep speed connected to performance
The goal is not the highest number you can produce once. It is more speed that you can access with an acceptable strike and shot pattern.
Use separate sessions for exploring maximum speed, then integrate the gain into driver practice with a target and consequence.
Safety and progression
Fast swinging creates high forces. Build gradually, especially if you are new to speed work, returning from injury or currently in pain.
Use a thorough warm-up, leave recovery between sessions and stop if you experience pain or unusual symptoms. Seek appropriate professional advice when health or injury is a concern.
Find your speed Match-Up
One golfer needs permission and practice to move faster. Another needs more force. Another needs a technical change that allows speed to reach the club without destroying contact.
The fastest route is the one matched to your current constraint, not the programme producing the loudest claim online.
