Golf Performance: Ability Is Not the Same as Performance

golf performance Jan 23, 2025

Most golfers have hit shots that prove they are capable of more than their usual score suggests.

They have also experienced the opposite: a swing that felt available on the range disappears on the course, under pressure or halfway through a round.

That is why we separate Current Ability from Current Performance.

What is Current Ability?

Current Ability is the golf that is genuinely available to you now.

It includes your technical skills, physical capacity, knowledge, experience and the shots you can produce. It is not your theoretical potential and it is not the perfect version of your swing. It is what already exists within your game.

What is Current Performance?

Current Performance is how much of that ability you access in a particular environment.

It changes with the course, the shot, pressure, attention, confidence, fatigue, pain, strategy and many other factors. You can therefore perform below your ability without having suddenly lost the ability itself.

This is one reason a golfer can play brilliantly one day and struggle the next without their underlying ability changing dramatically. We explore this further in Why Am I So Inconsistent at Golf?

The expression gap

The difference between your Current Ability and Current Performance is the expression gap.

If the gap is large, more technical information may not be the immediate answer. You may already possess the shot. The problem is accessing it when the environment changes.

This becomes particularly obvious when comparing practice with play. A movement that feels completely available on the range can change when the task, intention and consequences change on the course. Why Is My Golf Swing Different on the Course? looks at why this happens.

That could involve:

  • attention becoming trapped in internal swing thoughts;
  • poor decisions creating shots you rarely practise;
  • tension changing movement and strike;
  • fatigue reducing concentration or physical output;
  • practice that does not represent the demands of the course;
  • a lack of trust in the shot pattern you actually own.

The development gap

There is also a difference between Current Ability and your future potential. We call this the development gap.

This is where technical coaching, physical training, knowledge and deliberate skill development can expand what is available.

The two gaps require different work.

If you confuse them, you can spend months rebuilding a movement when the more urgent need was learning to access an existing skill. Or you can keep trying to “trust it” when the required shot is not yet reliable enough to trust.

Why generic golf advice struggles

Golf advice is often presented as if every golfer has the same problem.

One player may need a technical change. Another may need better physical options. Another may need a clearer intention, more representative practice or a strategy that suits their shot pattern.

The visible result can look similar while the solution is completely different.

This is also why the same swing advice can transform one golfer and make another worse. The usefulness of an instruction depends on the golfer receiving it and the problem it is trying to solve. We explore that in Why Golf Swing Advice Doesn't Work for Everyone.

Your Blueprint

We use the word Blueprint to describe the evolving picture of how you play golf.

It includes your movement, technique, shot pattern, physical capabilities, intentions, tendencies and the situations in which your performance changes.

The Blueprint is not a label. It evolves as you develop. Its purpose is to help us stop asking, “What is the right golf swing?” and start asking, “What is right for this golfer?”

You can read more about the thinking behind this in the Macro Golf philosophy.

Better golf starts with the right problem

Before adding another drill or swing thought, ask:

  1. Can I already produce the shot in another setting?
  2. When does it become less available?
  3. Is the limitation technical, physical, strategic, attentional or a combination?
  4. Does my practice expose me to the demands I face on the course?
  5. What evidence will show that the work is helping?

Improvement becomes far more useful when the intervention matches the problem.
